Manufactured Homeowners’ Bill of Rights

This past weekend, I spoke with a woman in Brandondale who was furious about something more people should know about.

The Minnesota Senate recently passed a Manufactured Home Community Bill of Rights.

It would add basic protections: limit rent increases, require justification for increases, provide clear utility billing, and add safeguards when communities are sold.

Senator Julia Coleman voted no.

That matters because many manufactured home residents own their homes, but rent the land underneath them.

When lot rents spike, families often cannot simply leave. Moving a manufactured home can cost thousands of dollars, and often it just isn't realistic.

This should concern everyone.

When corporate owners can raise housing costs without transparency or accountability, the effects do not stop at the edge of one community.

Housing instability strains schools, local services, family budgets, and entire neighborhoods. When consumers lose leverage, all of us pay the price.
